MA.912.D.7.1 Set Operations

What You Need To Know...

Perform set operations such as union and intersection, complement, and cross product 

  1. The benchmark will be assessed using MC (Multiple Choice) and FR (Fill in Response) items.
  2. Items may include symbols and notations from set theory.
  3. Items will not include more than 15 individual elements or 30 ordered pairs of data.
  4. The complement of a set will only be indicated in two ways.  The complement of Set A can be A' or ~A. 

Example One

The set T represents several Taurine breeds of cattle.

T = {Angus, Devon, Shorthorn, Texas Longhorn}

The set Z represents several Zebu breeds of cattle.

Z = {Boran, Nelore, Ponwar}

What is the total number of elements in × Z?

A.  7
B.  9
C. 12
D. 20



Example Two

Set D lists the age of Dianna's grandchildren.

D = {2, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11}

Set K lists the age of Karen's grandchildren.

K = {2, 10, 18}

Set P lists the age of Patrick's grandchildren.

P = {10, 11, 14}
